The Phoenix Comic – What’ll be in Issue 1?

October 10, 2011

At a time when it looks like comics are coming to a standstill, ABC figures are decreasing by the hundreds and more people are turning to video games like Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo Reach. But fortunately, that’s when the news hit us, DFC were back with a new comic title: The Phoenix Comic.

I’m really looking forward to this comic, it seems to be a replica of the DFC which is a brilliant move to make, kids love adventure stories (Something the Beano and Dandy seem to be missing) – except there’s one big difference, The Phoenix Comic will be available in shops – a very wise move to make. From what I know about the Phoenix; I can tell it’s going to be amazing and hopefully better than the DFC (if that’s even possible!) and last a lot longer.

The story ideas for their first issue also sound very exciting, one which I can not wait for is Jamie Smart’s ‘Bunny VS Monkey’, a strip which looks to be both very clever and also full of ‘Jamie Smart-styled humour’ (always a good thing!), you can see a sneak peek of it below and if you click on this link, you can play a fun (but hard) game of ‘Find the Woodland Animals’.

Another one which sounds very exciting is ‘The Pirates from Pangaea’, an exciting new story drawn by Neill Cameron (the artist behind the amazing ‘Mo-Bot High (my favourite strip in the DFC out of the issues I have)), here’s a sneak peek at Neill’s beautiful artwork:

Others include, The Pie Thief by Faz Choudhury who not only has a great style but also has a great name! His style reminds me of Hergé’s famous Tintin series, a style which I look up to, a style I find inspiring.

Lorenzo and Robin Etherington have another brilliant strip in there as well which seems to be a bit like a comic strip with Professor Popalot puzzles in it. It’s called The Dangerous Adventures of Van Doogan and sounds like its going to be really exciting! (I’ve missed seeing Lorenzo’s incredible artwork in comics since Yore ended.) 😦

Then there’s Kate Brown’s new adventure serial, The Lost Boy which actually sounds quite interesting (Hopefully better than Spider Moon at least)

As well as this there are some “four-frame funnies” (possibly inspired by the Dandy mini strips) as well as the intriguing “Phoenix Special Feature“, I’m guessing these will be one-off stories or will be in a readers voting competition (like Strictly Come Laughing and Comic Idol), I think the latter one is unlikely however. Some have been revealed; Ghost Ant by Dave Shelton, The Princess and the Peanut Butter Sandwiches by Adam Murphy, Kogg and Sprokit by Jamie Littler and Troy Trailblazer by Rob Deas. They all look brilliant but for some reason ‘The Princess and the Peanut Butter Sandwiches‘ seems to be the one I’m looking forward to the most (probably because it seem to be a lot like My Own Genie.

Overall I think this comic strip is going to be very exciting indeed, all I can say is hurry up January 7th 2012, I want my Phoenix Comic! 😀
